DTV Visa in Thailand: Eligibility, Documents and Costs

The DTV can make a longer stay in Thailand much easier to plan. It is not, however, a five-year permission to stay without checking your passport again. Nor does qualifying mean earning a particular salary or collecting enough followers on social media.

This guide separates the application, the money you need to demonstrate and the permission you receive on arrival. Requirements were checked on 5 October 2026. Use the checklist of the Thai embassy responsible for your application; a document accepted in one jurisdiction may not satisfy another.

Who the Destination Thailand Visa is for

The official categories cover workcation applicants such as remote workers and freelancers, people undertaking qualifying Thai activities such as Muay Thai, culinary training or medical treatment, and spouses or children under 20 of DTV holders. The financial evidence concerns funds of at least 500,000 baht, rather than a universal US$80,000 annual salary. Choose the category that describes what you will actually do. An overseas employee should be able to explain the employer, job and remote arrangement. A freelancer should make their ongoing professional activity understandable. Someone taking a course needs genuine confirmation from the provider, not a purchased letter for an activity they do not intend to attend.

Five years, 180 days and an extension are different things

The DTV is a five-year multiple-entry visa. A visit can be granted up to 180 days, with one extension of up to another 180 days for that entry. An extension is an application to Immigration, not a promise that every holder automatically receives 360 days. After that combined stay you must leave; a still-valid DTV can be used for a subsequent entry. These distinctions are stated on the London embassy's DTV page.

Keep three dates in your calendar: passport expiry, visa expiry and the last day of your current permitted stay. Check the arrival stamp before leaving the immigration counter. If anything appears wrong, ask for clarification there rather than discovering it while booking your next flight.

Build a document pack that tells one consistent story

Start with the responsible embassy's current list, not an old screenshot from a group chat. Write the date you checked it at the top of your own working copy. Then collect the evidence in folders matching the requested upload categories.

• Identity: a valid passport and a recent photograph meeting the application's specifications.
• Application jurisdiction: the residence and location evidence requested by that embassy.
• Funds: statements covering the requested period, with your identity, currency and balances clear.
• Purpose: employment evidence, a professional portfolio or confirmation of the qualifying activity.
• Family: the main holder's visa and relationship evidence where applying as a dependent.
• Additional checks: police clearance, translations or other evidence on the current local checklist.

There have been recent document changes. London now lists permanent-residence evidence and police clearance issued within six months. Washington's September update lists residence evidence and an FBI certificate example issued within three months; it also asks for three months of statements meeting its balance test. These are jurisdiction-specific instructions, not interchangeable worldwide rules.

A useful employer letter explains the arrangement in plain terms and gives a genuine contact for verification. A freelance portfolio is stronger when the work samples fit the contracts or invoices you are submitting. Do not invent clients, hide an inconsistency or borrow funds briefly just to manufacture a misleading statement.

What the DTV actually costs

The money shown in financial evidence is not the visa fee. Washington currently lists a US$400 application fee; London lists £300. Use the fee displayed by your responsible embassy and payment system instead of converting a baht figure and assuming the result is what you will be charged.

Build your application budget from actual quotations: visa payment, police certificate if required, certified translations, travel to the application location and any qualifying course or treatment. Separately allow for living expenses, suitable healthcare cover and the costs of a later extension or departure. Do not count the same savings as both freely spendable holiday money and funds you still need to demonstrate.

Ask Immigration about the current extension fee and evidence before your stay is nearly over. An agent's service charge, a government's application charge and a course fee are different purchases. Get a breakdown if they are bundled into one price.

Work, tax and banking still need their own checks

A workcation visa should not be treated as permission for every job or business activity. Before accepting work involving a Thai employer or customers, obtain advice on the relevant immigration and labour requirements. Your employer should also approve working from Thailand, including its data-security and payroll implications.

Do not assume the DTV guarantees a local bank account either. Confirm the bank's current requirements for your status before moving money or choosing a long lease.
